Grimsdyke Primary School

Background

Grimsdyke Primary School was experiencing significant problems with congestion during school pick up and drop off times, causing environmental and road safety problems for residents and pupils.

Following public engagement in Summer 2020 a School Street scheme was introduced via an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) to create space for people to socially distance and help make streets safer, quieter and less polluted.

The Council's Traffic & Road Safety Advisory Panel (TARSAP) and Cabinet approved a six-month extension to the scheme trial from April 2021. This was to undertake further traffic studies monitoring the scheme and to engage with residents, businesses, parent/carers and the School.

After the trial period the feedback and monitoring was analysed and reports recommending the scheme become permanent were presented to Cabinet in January 2022. Cabinet approved the recommendation and the School Street became permanent in February 2022.

How does the scheme work?

The scheme runs during school term time from Monday to Friday each week.

Restrictions apply at the following locations and times:

• Sylvia Avenue between Colburn Avenue and Lyndon Avenue,
• Monday – Friday, 8:15am – 9:15am and 2:45pm – 3:45pm.

The scheme is controlled virtually using CCTV enforcement cameras and there are traffic signs at the entry points to the zone to inform drivers of the restrictions.

Local residents living in the zone and blue badge holders are exempt from restrictions, by applying for a free virtual permit for their vehicle(s). The permits allow access to the School Street zone at all times. Other exemptions apply including emergency services and council waste collection services.

All vehicles without permits that enter the zone during operating times, may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
