Welcome to the Grimsdyke Road Area 20mph Zone Scheme engagement page.

London Borough of Harrow's engagement on traffic calming measures in the Grimsdyke Road area will run for seven weeks from 20 October to 7 December 2026.

You can view the proposals now. The survey will open on Tuesday 20 October 2026.

What are we proposing?

We are proposing to introduce a 20mph speed limit alongside traffic-calming measures to help reduce vehicle speeds and improve road safety for everyone.

These measures include a combination of sinusoidal speed humps, speed cushions and 20mph road markings.

We want to hear what local residents and other people who use the area think before a decision is made.

Why are we proposing these changes?

We work with Transport for London (TfL) to improve road safety across Harrow, including looking at road traffic collisions and identifying where changes to the road network could help improve safety.

In 2023, we carried out a borough-wide review to identify areas where 20mph zones and traffic-calming measures could be introduced. The areas were ranked in order of priority, and we have been working through this programme. The Grimsdyke Road area is now next for consideration.

People walking, cycling and riding motorcycles can be particularly vulnerable if a collision happens. Reducing vehicle speeds, particularly on residential roads, can help make roads safer and make walking and cycling easier.

The proposals aim to:

  • reduce vehicle speeds and the risk of collisions
  • improve safety for people walking and cycling
  • encourage more walking and cycling
  • discourage vehicles from using residential roads as shortcuts.

Where is the scheme proposed?

The proposed 20mph zone would include:

Broadmead Close, Cherry Croft Gardens, Colburn Avenue, Elm Hatch, Felden Close, Grimsdyke Road, Hallam Gardens, Hillview Close, Hillview Road, Oakdene Close, St Cuthberts Gardens, Thorndyke Court, Westfield Park and Wessex Drive.

What would change?

A 20mph speed limit would be introduced across the proposed zone. Different traffic-calming measures would be used to help reduce vehicle speeds, depending on the location and type of road.

Proposed traffic-calming measures

The following traffic-calming measures are proposed:

  1. Sinusoidal Humps - Sinusoidal speed humps are similar to traditional round-top humps but have a gentler initial slope and extend across the full width of the road. They are designed to reduce vehicle speeds while reducing discomfort for people cycling and passengers on buses.
  2. Speed Cushions - Speed cushions are narrower raised areas designed to reduce vehicle speeds. Their width allows wider vehicles, such as fire engines and ambulances, to pass over them more easily. Smaller vehicles, such as cars, need to drive over at least part of the cushion, encouraging drivers to reduce their speed. Speed cushions are proposed on Wessex Drive only, as the existing concrete road surface makes installing sinusoidal speed humps impractical.
  3. 20mph Road Markings - 20mph roundels would be marked on the road at selected locations to remind drivers of the speed limit. They are generally used where physical traffic-calming measures are difficult or inappropriate to install.

What about emergency vehicles?

We recognise that traffic-calming measures can affect emergency vehicles.

The police, fire and ambulance services, along with other interested organisations, will be consulted on the proposals. Their feedback will be considered alongside responses to the public consultation before a final decision is made.

Have your say

We want to know what you think about the proposed 20mph zone and traffic-calming measures.

The survey will be open from Tuesday 20 October until 11.59pm on Monday 7 December 2026. Once open, you can complete it below.

If you require further clarification on the proposals, please email transportation@harrow.gov.uk

What happens next?

After the consultation closes, we will analyse the responses received and consider whether any changes should be made to the proposals.

The consultation findings and proposals will then be considered by the Highways Decision Board, which will decide whether the scheme should go ahead.

We will publish an update on MyHarrow Talk once a decision has been made.

If the scheme is approved, construction is currently expected to start in Summer 2027, subject to contractor availability and weather conditions.
