Benefits – 

• Sinusoidal humps are effective in reducing traffic speeds; and,
• Sinusoidal humps will provide a deterrent to rat running vehicles.

Dis-benefits – 

• Larger wheelbase emergency vehicle (e.g., ambulances, fire appliances) response times will be slowed down; and,
• Noise and vibration may be perceived by adjacent residents and businesses. 

The hump locations are chosen by the consultants designing the scheme, to ensure adequate spacing as per the guidance and site suitability (e.g. avoiding direct conflict with resident dropped kerbs). Humps do not impact on parking capacity as you can continue to park on top of them.

In a 20mph zone, we generally only mark 20mph roundels on the carriageway rather than placing repeater signs.
